Whether you have an old computer or a new one, you’ve probably been wondering: What really is antivirus software? What the heck is the difference between antivirus software programs? What is Internet Security software? Which one works the best? What does it do? How much do I need? Ok, let’s start with a little history…
As the Internet has grown by leaps and bounds over the last decade, it has attracted a number of people who don’t exactly have the highest ethics. There are people around the world who apparently have nothing better to do than try and either goof with your computer just for kicks or steal your money or identity. These creeps are called hackers. They’re usually brilliant people who have a knack for writing computer code, and they either do this stuff to have fun or to make money.
Since they have a knack for writing computer code, they will often write little bits of computer code called viruses. Some hackers will create viruses just to see how many people they can send it to and how many computers or networks they can control or even take down. Other hackers, the really dangerous ones, will write viruses that scan your Internet connection, your computer, or your home and business network for things such as bank account numbers, credit card numbers, social security numbers, and so on. Once these viruses find what they’re looking for, they are often designed to send this information back to the hacker. These viruses will sometimes come and go without you even knowing it, or they’ll sit on your computer until they’re activated by a certain date, keystrokes, or whatever.
