Our Recommended Laptop

by Scott on July 2, 2011

The laptops we always recommend are made by Toshiba.

As computers go, Toshiba only specializes in laptops, which is good for us consumers.   They don’t even make desktops.  Specifically, here’s why we like Toshiba laptops:

  • Reliability:  Based on our experience, Toshiba laptops have always been refreshingly durable.  Laptops made by Toshiba are the workhorses of laptops.  We have yet to see one fail on its own (even with a nasty virus), whimper when opening multiple programs, or just plain crash for no reason.  By contrast, we could fill a scrap yard with laptops made by other manufacturers that just never started up one day, froze for no reason, or even worked at all after being dropped.  And yes, we’ve seen Toshiba’s that did not fail, even after being painfully dropped.
  • Speed:  Here, too, Toshiba laptops are typically built with Intel processors, which are speedier and built for higher levels of performance.  Just as with desktops, you can find less expensive Toshiba’s that are made with AMD processors.  Stick with a Toshiba laptop and an Intel processor, and you’ll be cruising along nicely.  (If you need a refresher on processors, check out this article for more info.)  It’s also interesting to note that Toshiba will usually incorporate the newest and fastest processors into their machines long before their competitors will.
  • Variety:  You’ll also find that Toshiba offers a wide range of models based on price, features, and productivity for a user of any level.  They have everything from basic laptops to more advanced laptops that are often more sophisticated than many desktops on the market today.
  • Simplicity:  You guessed it.  Take a Toshiba out of the box, plug it in, and it starts up without having to think about it.  And, despite what Microsoft throws at us for operating systems, Toshiba just keeps it simple and elegant.  What’s more is the screens on their laptops are usually very easy on the eyes!
  • Buying:  Purchasing a Toshiba laptop is usually pretty easy, too.  You can find them at stores like Best Buy, and their Web sites are simple to use.  You can call a customer sales rep, chat with one online, or just configure and purchase your machine on your own.  Check out the Computer Buying Guide articles first before making a purchase so you’re more familiar with what kind of desktop you like.
