Recommended Anti-Virus Software

by Scott on July 2, 2011

To combat viruses, you can purchase anti-virus software and install it on your computer, if you haven’t already.  The two biggest commercial names in anti-virus software now are Norton and McAfee.  There are many other vendors as well, but these two usually have the lion’s share of the market.

Based on years of experience with several anti-virus software programs, both for home use and for corporate computer networks, we recommend the Norton products from Symantec.  At the moment, the capstone product they are selling is called Norton 360.  This product includes their reputable Norton Anti-Virus software, which finds and kills viruses, and Norton Internet Security, which helps to protect your computer.

Here’s why we recommend Norton:  Just so you know, nothing is bulletproof, but the consistently strongest and most comprehensive programs we have used are from Norton.  Norton (actually Symantec, its parent company) has teams of people around the world on a 24/7/365 basis who identify and develop defenses against known and as-yet-unknown viruses.

Norton constantly updates what are called virus definitions (the anti-virus programs) and sends them to your computer, often automatically when you log onto the Internet.  In Norton-speak, whether it’s 360, Anti-Virus, or Internet Security, this feature is called LiveUpdate.

Fortunately, Norton’s products are also user-friendly.  They are essentially designed to not bother you and to run in the background.
